Vintage hand-blown handkerchief glass vase with smoky blue swirl design in the style of Fulvio Bianconi and Paolo Venini.

The shade of this vase is called “slumped glass” or "handkerchief" as it mimics a dropped handkerchief. This technique was invented in approximately 1938 in Murano, Italy by glass artists Fulvio Bianconi and Paolo Venini. To make the vase, a square of glass is placed on top of a flat-ended metal cylinder and heated in a kiln. As the glass begins to soften and sag it is stretched into the desired shape. Each vase is unique. The various handkerchief designs became enormously popular in Italy and elsewhere starting in the 1940s.
